What’s in your lab environment?

Everyone has their own lab environment or playground. Everyone?! Well, the cool kids do.

I’ll provide some insight into what’s in my lab environment

This is my domain controller.

TEE-PKI

 

This is my Offline Root Certificate Authority

Memory: 2GB

  • Root CA

TEE-MDT

 

This is my MDT server used to create reference image task sequences. Non domain joined.

Memory: 2GB

  • WSUS

  • MDT – latest
  • ADK – latest

     

TEE-MDT-Build

 

This is a VM that I either boot from ISO or PXE to create a new Windows 10 image

Memory: 4GB

 

TEE-SQL-CMCB-1

 

This is a SQL server that hosts the ConfigMgr TP database, WSUS db, Reporting Services DB’s, and the ConfigMgrTP Data Warehouse.

This server is also part of an Always On Availability Group with the ConfigMgrTP as its only database

Memory: 4GB

  • Certificate Enrollment Policy Web Service
  • Certificate Enrollment Web Service

Applications:

  • SQL Server 2017 Enterprise
  • SSMS
  • SSDT 2017
  • ConfigMgrCB client

 

TEE-SQL-CMCB-2

 

This is a SQL server that hosts the ConfigMgr TP database

This server is also part of an Always On Availability Group with the ConfigMgrTP as its only database

Memory: 4GB

  • None

  • SQL Server 2017 Enterprise
  • SSMS
  • SSDT 2017
  • ConfigMgrTPclient

 

TEE-CMCB-1

 

This is a ConfigMgr Current Branch Primary Site.

All ConifgMgr roles are installed except the Application Catalog. (That is going away in a few months. Plus, the cool kids don’t use it.)

This is also the ConfigMgr reporting point with SSRS installed.

Memory: 4GB

Roles:

  • All ConfigMgr prerequisite roles
  • WSUS

Applications

  • SSMS
  • SSDT 2017
  • SSRS 2017
  • ADK – latest
  • MDT – latest
  • ConfigMgrTP Client

 

TEE-W10-xxxx

 

These are Windows 10 1703 and Windows 10 1709 machines with the ConfigMgrTP client.

Memory: 2GB

  1. Nice lab, is it hardware based or cloud? I’m looking to set up my own as cheaply as possible, my MBP i7 16GB ram just isn’t up to it now, do you have any suggestions???

    1. Hardware based. I just updated the post with RAM requirements for each machine. My laptop has 32GB of RAM with a 1TB SSD for the VHD’s.
